Noelle Takes Flight

Oh what fun it is to ride….with a infant on a plane, across country, by yourself! NOT!!!! Tj wasn't along for the journey because he was on one of his own. Driving from Orlando to San Diego with the help of our friend Patrick. I do have to say Noelle is such a doll and did so good on the way to Arkansas for our family reunion, there was a very short lay over and she was a peach. But on the way from Arkansas to San Diego was rough, my poor sugar was over it and so was I. When we walked onto the first plane I asked the flight attendant for any advice, his reply….Benadryl!!!

I had read a few blogs and articles with tips for flying with an infant and they all pretty much said the same thing including feeding the baby on take off and landing. But what they don't tell you is what if it's a short flight and your baby doesn't want to eat again on the way down and your baby HATES a pacifier. Or how to keep your baby from exposing you in front of strange men while your feeding them under your breastfeeding cover.

So this is how I did it!

What I wore:
- A nursing tank top to keep from having to lift my entire shirt to feed her
-A button up shirt or caridgan over the tank for more coverage
-Leggings
-I would suggest something very simple and comfortable for footwear that you can take off at the security check point without having to fumble around like Toms

What she wore:
-Something very simple and non fussy. She wore a onesie without pants in order for me to change her diaper easily if needed, and boy did I need to (we'll talk about that later)

Entertainment:
-Just a few of their small favorites will do. It is honestly annoying to be digging in your diaper bag for toys with a baby in your lap
-Noelle had her Sophie (duh) which by the way, having something to clean it if it falls would be a really good idea!!
-A rattle, though toys that don't make much noise would be nice for the other passengers or a wipes bag will do

Don't be a bag lady!! Seriously! Fight every urge you have to pack your life with you on the plane. I tried my hardest not to over pack and still ended up with a diaper bag, my purse, a carry-on and a back pack. It was way too much. But I was also moving across the country so I'm sure a normal vacation WITH my husband wouldn't be so bad. It is easier said than done especially for an over packer like myself. If they offer to check any carry on's well that's a no brainer.

Wear your baby! There was no way in the world I was going to be one of those Mom's I'd seen in the airport struggling to open and close their strollers through the security check point. I always feel so bad for them. Why make it any harder on yourself? If you need to have a stroller I would look into checking it if possible. It was so easy with her in my Baby K'tan wrap

Seating:
If you are on a plane where you pick your own seating (like Southwest) don't cut the boarding time too close because you want to do family boarding so you can get a window seat. If the airline has assigned seating, they will usually place you in a window seat. But you do have to call ahead and tell the airline that you are traveling with an infant. This is important because it may take awhile when you go to check in if you didn't do it in advance or if they don't do their job and make a note on your reservation (I digress). Now I wish they would make a note they said, "don't sit this nice lady and her baby next to any creepers". Ok so the front of the plane vs. the back. Obviously this is only if it's self seating. I did both (and the middle) and I think I would prefer the back. It is closer to the majority of the restrooms (easier for changing the baby), closer to the flight attendants if you need them to help you with anything and less people will be affected if your baby starts to go HAM on you.

Bring snacks:
-If you are a savage like me then those little peanuts and pretzels aren't going to do. And oh yeah snacks for your baby if they are eating too. If you aren't traveling by yourself then it won't be such a hassle to stop and get food in the airport but by yourself would be a challenge. I had very short layovers so changing Noelle and getting to the next boarding gate on time was challenge enough.

The first two flights to Little Rock were great, she ate on the way up for plane #1 and was sleeping during the landing. Plane #2 she ate on the way up and was awake during landing but didn't seem to mind the pressure changes. I think it's because the pressure change isn't as severe going down as it is going up and we thankfully had the middle seat open for both flights. Plane #3 was very different. We had this crop duster...

Packing

I will not complain, I will not complain...this is what I asked for so now that it is actually happening I gotta roll with it, with a smile on my face! But OMG we have so much crap!!! And crap has no place on the road, especially not since we will be moving every 3 months for the next year and a half. Call us crazy but this sounds like extreme fun to us!!

Mad House!

My honey has a LOOOONNNGG do list

Going through some of my old stuff. I refuse the notion that I am a hoarder.

Here is my crown from placing 1st in a Hot Body Contest in 2005 (still can't believe I did that)
My Nano Baby from middle school. I remember being threatened on several occasions to put this away or have it taken. It frequently saw the inside of my teacher's desks'. I was kind of a brat in middle school, but who wasn't.
See all very important items.

And then there's these…...

Hehe!!

Most of our stuff will be placed in storage and we plan on using my folk's house for storage as well. We still have no idea how we are going to do the move but we'll figure it out soon enough. In the mean time I'll be covering my eyes while I throw things away.

MrsHazleyandaBaby Blog Hits The Road

You know the feeling of trusting God for something and believing whole heartedly that He's going to do it but when it actually happens, you are still in complete AWE of Him?!! Yeah me too :))

MrsHazleyandaBaby blog is about to get a lot more fun because…I'm going to be a traveling nurse (again)!!! Tj will work remotely and come along while I take nursing contracts in different cities and this time around we'll be plus one. We were so blessed to be able to do this together a couple years ago before I started at my current job and God has made a way for us to do it once more. After coming back to work from my maternity leave I met several travel nurses and began sparking conversations with them about my time as a traveler and about their current adventures. I wasn't sure if this was something I could have ever imagined doing again (especially with an infant), but it sure sounded intriguing. I came home telling my husband about my new coworkers and that's how we ended up here.

We started praying that if God saw fit for us to do this again that he would make a way. The ease of this move has been insane. My husband's boss and mentor was so gracious as to allow Tj to work remotely again with 100% of his support. After he got the okay, I went to my nurse manager. She was sad to hear that I wanted to leave but completely understood why we were doing it and said she'd welcome me back with open arms. I can't tell you how great this felt. It can be so scary making a step like this but with God everything is possible and I thank Him for the fearlessness he has given us.

Once we got their support we began making plans for our home. We decided to rent it out and the SAME DAY of it being posted for rent, we had a showing and an application submitted. The crazy part is the family is from Orange, CA. The last place that Tj and I traveled to on assignment before moving home. It was fate. Within 2 weeks, the house was under contract for rent and the wait began for the job.

I was not willing to work anything other than a 12 hour day shift, for a total of 36 hours (my usual schedule). And when I tell you between the 5 companies I was in contact with, NONE of them had 12 hour day shift positions. Tons of day/night rotation (not on your life) and 8 hour days, 5 days a week (I'll be damned). I knew that God was going to have to make a way out of NO way. We waited and waited with no new openings for the shift I was looking for. A job in Santa Rosa, CA became available with 12 hr days and we jumped. I was all set for an interview and then I was made aware that the hospital had changed its needs and was now looking for a nurse to work 8 hour days. Bummed, we prayed harder and waited more. Lord have mercy the waiting!!! He may not come when you want Him, but He'll be there right on time. About a week later I got a phone call for another 12 hour day position and I said YES….yes..yes…yes!!! After interviewing, it felt like forrrrreeeevvveeeerrrrrrrr until we heard back. I knew it was going to be fierce competition for the position because it was in a great location and for the simple fact that it was one of the only 12 hour day positions available. When I finally heard back, I was told "You must have good karma" because not only was I chosen over the stiff competition but I was approved my requested days off that land at the beginning of the contract. My response "No I'd like to think it's God"! Lol!!

Ok ok, so where are we moving to...

AHHHHH!!!!! We're beyond excited!! It's going to be a great summer!

The contract is for 13 weeks and starts July 2nd :) After that we don't know where we'll be but we know that God will lead us in the right direction!!! We'd like to travel for about a year, maybe longer. He faithfulness has been unbelievable and I can't wait to see what He has in store for our family!

It's going to be so much fun posting about the things we find for Noelle to get into and things to do as a family. We always knew we wanted her to be a traveler but we didn't expect she'd start so soon :)

Oh…and other things I will be posting about:
-How to travel with an infant
-How to transport breast milk across the country (ugh)
-Trying to avoid stranger anxiety when your baby is only around Mom and Dad
-Does this city have a Buy Buy Baby? Very important

I pray that Noelle looks to us as inspiration that you don't have to live a life expected of you. Living in a box is NOT why Christ died for us. She should not be a afraid to take huge leaps of faith, because even if she falls He'll be there to pick her up.

Stay tuned…..

Elle's 4 Month Update

Our "Noelley Belly" is just the smiliest, easiest baby alive! Everyone compliments us on her demeanor. I wish we could take credit but it's just how God made her :)
